ABOUT

In 2004 I started to make short fiction films shot on video and in 2009 this lead to shooting films on the beautiful super 8 mm film format. An 'imperfect' film format with many ‘shortcomings’ which at the same time are its advantage and charm…
I reached out to the Remodernist Film initiative because my filmmaking aesthetic was in par with the Remodernist Film Manifesto and also because they promoted the use of super 8 mm film and an alliance with the movement emerged.

A thesis has been written about Remodernist Film by the French student Florian Maricourt, who graduated with this at the Sorbonne university in Paris and an anthology film was produced: In Passing. In my opinion the film In Passing was the perfect platform to showcase the power of Super 8. However, most part of In Passing was shot digitally on video. So in 2011 I decided to produce an anthology film myself, but this time completely shot on Super 8 mm film: Impression X

Impression X is a 75 minutes experimental feature film completed in 2022, made by 16 underground filmmakers all over the world who joined powers for this unique project, celebrating the long take and the fauvism in cinema. A collection of Super 8 mm films which are set in Portugal, Mexico, Hungary, Spain, U.S.A., Sri Lanka, Japan, Scotland, Poland, Holland and Suriname. The assignment was to film the whole cartridge in 1 long take of 3 minutes and 20 seconds, the duration of a super 8 mm film cartridge filmed at 18 frames per second. A lot of films, especially the commercial ones, have a lot of cuts in them and it is very common that the duration of a shot is around 1 to 5 seconds. I believe that the longer a take is, the more one gets connected to what is taking place on the screen. Filming in one long take was to experiment with this idea and Impression X is a showcase of this.
